Fulfilment

Issue # 41: Discussions or decisions? 29 January 2010

Hi

As we start a new calendar year, you may have found yourself in planning and goal-setting conversations, perhaps even with yourself on your new year resolutions. I hope those conversations were timed appropriately and not just because it's the beginning of a new calendar year!

All too often in planning conversations, though, we (collectively) are not in the same conversation: while some of us are exploring ideas and options, others are shooting down our ideas because they're in decision-making mode. What we lose are creativity, shared expectations and commitment.

I've experienced this first-hand too many times and heard it from coaching and mentoring clients too frequently.

So to open the year with this month's Fulfilment, we focus on commitment and creativity in communication. Here are the features you can enjoy:

   - Featured workshop: Communicate Meaningfully: What does mis-communication cost your business in lost sales, poor service, lousy team morale and bad reputation? Try our one-day workshop to fix this -- delivered at your boardroom or as a team-building break-away.

   - Article: Discussions or decisions?: By distinguishing whether we're having discussions or making decisions, we bring a critical element to enhancing creativity, managing expectations and securing commitment in our communication.

   - Article: Brainstorming Rules: Learn how to improve your team's problem-solving skill, expand collective creativity and generally communicate better by brainstorming better.

Next month won't be "my show" and you can count on expert contributions from ProMentor Associates!

See you in February.

FEATURED WORKSHOP:

Communicate Meaningfully

If communicating clearly were the sole responsibility of the sender, what extra care would you take in the messages you send?

What does bad communication cost your business in lost sales, poor service, lousy team morale and bad reputation? Do you struggle to say "No" and end up over-committed? Do you feel misunderstood?

Our one-day workshop on how to Communicate Meaningfully can kit out your team with the skills you need to solve these frustrations. Improve your sales and service! Grow your confidence! Build a healthy reputation! Simply by strengthening your ability to communicate clearly and meaningfully, you can do it.

Key outcomes of Communicate Meaningfully:

  • Spot the causes of communication breakdowns and how to stop them.

  • Learn how to say "No" confidently and comfortably.

  • Assess yourself against our 13 universal rules for good communication.

  • Learn how to communicate clearly to improve customer service, team work and more.

Praise for Communicate Meaningfully:
The workshops are so beneficial as you get to the point and you keep us focused. You have been very approachable, respectful of professionalism and confidentiality and kept up your side by giving us feedback after workshops.

Discussion or Decision?

Thankfully, there's no need to self-flagellate over this ubiquitous human foible -- it's exceedingly normal for us to mis-communicate. In fact, when analysing all that could go wrong in each micro step of communication, I'm amazed at how we regularly achieve such high levels of shared understanding!

By distinguishing whether we're having discussions or making decisions, we bring a critical element to managing expectations and securing shared, real commitment in our communication.
