Hi
With the burgeoning popularity of life coaching and executive coaching world-wide, we are seeing a new definition of coaching taking traction. With this new definition, I wonder, can we say that sports coaches are in fact coaches?
Understanding the contemporary distinctions between coaching, mentoring, managing and training, I think that sports coaches do more mentoring and managing than actual coaching.
At best, what we might call a successful coach could in fact be a good manager and mentor.
Yet, if we were to apply the best practices of mentoring where a need for managing was more appropriate, the result might be a failure to achieve intended results and the "coach's" resignation demanded. It wasn't too long ago that this pattern dominated South Africa's national sporting landscape.
The reasoning for this might be obscured behind the meanings of each modality, so for a dollop of distinctions, here's what you can discover in this month's Fulfilment:
- Featured workshop: Mentoring for Managers: Find out how to introduce a mentoring and coaching style to your management skills repertoire in ProMentor's 1- or ½-day workshop.
- Can a Manager Mentor, Train or Coach? With entertainingly practical examples of each modality, Corné offers us clarity.
- Distinctions between Coaching, Mentoring et al: A definitive classification of the various modalities? There are many definitions of coaching and mentoring -- let's start our own debate!
For further resources that can deepen and enrich this month's learning on offer, we've picked out these related articles:
- Caring for Your People Is Not HR's Job: The 2 primary duties of any manager are to hire the right people and to motivate the team to achieve business targets; delegate these leadership duties at your peril.
- Feedback or Feedforward?: As a critical skill in managing, coaching, training and mentoring, Tania shares how to give effective feedback by feeding forward.
- Reclaim Your Power: It takes two to tango -- be coachable, mentorable, manageable and trainable by being able to take straight feedback powerfully. Alex teaches us how.
In next month's Fulfilment, we explore how to achieve strategic and operational focus in marketing by working with niches. Not just any niche, but niches that match your ideal customer with their ideal product or service.
So until September's issue, all the best.

Can a Manager Mentor, Train or Coach?
By Corné Mac Kenzie
31 August 2009
The terms manager, mentor, trainer and coach are thrown about loosely and often without really knowing what they mean. Coaching and mentoring might seem alike, but their distinctions are great. Knowing when to apply each (and when not to) is the mark of a well-rounded manager. Read this outline to help shave the fuzz.
