Hi
We celebrated the 3rd birthday of my daughter, Erica, a few months ago and, of the many insightful lessons I'm learning from our children as they grow, one is how they are so much in the present.
In watching them, I realise how much we live in the future or the past and miss out being in the present. When Erica asks "Let's play," she has absolutely no intention of playing any time later than this instant.
When I think about the concept of time, I realise that time is simply that, a concept we've constructed through language. But time is not a substance that can be created or stored, spent or depleted. Even our memories of past experiences are memories that exist in the present. Our plans, visions and dreams for the future are intentions that exist, too, in the now.
So I wonder how we adults got to lose our childlike nowness and create such a sense of reality out of merely a concept. How are we conditioning our children that they learn our impatience and ask on a long country drive, just 5 minutes after leaving home, "Are we there yet?"
And is the enlightened response as simple as replying "No, we're here now?"
Perhaps patience is not a virtue, something we switch on to help us tolerate a tedious undertaking. Rather, if patience is a way of being in the present, then we have all the time in the universe to be exactly where we are now, in this moment, without concerns and stresses about the future or past.

Judo Your To-Do List to Balance Your Life
By Brent Combrink 30 April 2008
I'd suggest that this thinking is the biggest reason we labour under so much stress in attempting to balance an unbalanceable equation. For the entrepreneur, business leader or professional in practice, our mental references of what time and work are and their relationship with each other, summarised in the cliché "time management", create for us a mission impossible - time itself, obviously, cannot be managed.
